Andre was last seen with his mother, Monique Rivera. While walking in her neighborhood on March 28, 1989, Monique ran into two black women who befriended her. The women engaged Monique in a conversation about her children and then offered to take her shopping for clothes. Monique liked the women and agreed to meet them the next day for more shopping. That night Monique called her boyfriend's sister and asked her if she could baby-sit the children at the apartment while she went shopping. When Monique's two girlfriends arrived, they didn't come up to the apartment to get Monique but instead they called her from a pay phone on the street corner and asked her to come downstairs.
The women insisted that Monique bring Andre with her. Monique left the apartment with Andre, and her two other children stayed behind. Monique and her son never returned from the shopping trip, but Monique's body was found in a wooded area near City Island Road in the Bronx on March 30. She had been strangled, and there was no sign of Andre.
Detectives believe that the two women Monique met and went shopping with are responsible for her death and for the disappearance of Andre. The two women were never identified, but detectives do have a brief description of them. According to police, the women were driving a 1988 or 1989 burgundy Pontiac Grand Am Sports Edition with tinted windows and possibly a Maryland license plate. One of the women was approximately 30 years old and had red hair. The other woman was closer to 22 years of age. Both appeared to be of average height and weight.
