On September 28, 1996, Jesus De La Cruz and a friend were walking along Park Street. Jesus was pushing his pink Huffy bike, which had two flat tires. They were stopped by a man walking a dog who told Jesus he had a blue mountain bike for him. The man and Jesus were last seen turning the corner onto Western Avenue.
The day after Jesus' disappearance, police arrested the man. They learned he had called in sick from his job on the night Jesus' went missing. Police searched the man's house and car and found duct tape, handcuffs, and the dog Jesus' friend had seen the man walking the evening before. However, none of the items revealed any evidence that could be linked back to Jesus.
