Authorities in Maryland say the remains of a
woman found eight years ago are those of a Mifflin County woman.
They identify the woman as Tonya Gardner of Reedsville. She had
been missing from her home for about two months in 1996 when her
remains were found near Interstate 70 at Route 94 in Lisbon, which
is in Howard County, Maryland.
The nonprofit agency known as the Doe Network helped police
identify her. Maryland Director Kylen (KEYE'-lin) Johnson of
Clarksburg made the initial discovery. He was reading a missing
person report about Gardner on the Web and found similarities in
her reported surgical scars with those found on the body.
Pennsylvania State Police checked dental records and confirmed
the match this week.
