At 22.45 on the evening of September 28, 1994, Long left his mother’s home on McPhillips Street for a workout at Premier Fitness several kilometers away at 413 McPhillips Street. He has not been seen or heard from since.
Prior to his disappearance Long had worked all day at Winnipeg Supply. At 18.21 he deposited his pay check from work into his bank account and withdrew $480.00. At 19.15 he picked-up his girlfriend and took her for dinner to Sorrento’s restaurant at 2200 McPhillips Street.
He took her home around 20.45 and advised her that he would likely be going to the gym for a workout (something he usually did around 23.00). It is believed that Long did in fact show up at the gym as his signature appears on the register, but he may not have worked out or at least did not stay long. It is unknown if he went anywhere afterward or if he had any plans on meeting anyone, however he was known to frequent Bullwinkel’s Bar on Regent Avenue in Transcona and may have gone there.
Long had made arrangements for a friend to borrow his van the next morning and give him a ride to work. He also owed this friend $400.00 and was going to give it to him that morning as well. Long never called his friend and did not show up for work at 08:00 the next morning either. His family, girlfriend, friends and coworkers have not seen or heard from him since. Although he had money in his bank account, it has remained untouched since he deposited his pay check the evening of September 28, 1994.
In the days following his disappearance, Long was required to testify as a witness at the Attempt Murder trial of one of his friends who had been arrested for stabbing a woman repeatedly in his presence a year earlier. As the victim could not identify her attacker, the charges were dropped against his friend once Long did not appear in court.
