Cynthia left her residence at 7:30 a.m. en route to Forsythe Junior High School, 1655 Newport Road in Ann Arbor, about one mile from her home. She never arrived at school and did not return home that evening. Several weeks later there were unverified reports that she was seen walking around Ann Arbor.
In April, Cynthia's parents received two phone calls from her within a two-hour period. She did not know her whereabouts at the time of the calls, though police believe the calls came from Detroit. An extortion-type call was received by the family on May 5, 1970. Since that time, no further contact has been made with the family.
As of 2019, Cynthia's disappearance is possibly linked to an alleged serial killer in Michigan.
