The decedent was located in the Holston River, near Riverfront Park in Kingsport, Tennessee in August 2003.
Rescuers retrieved the body, which was about halfway between the river banks. There was no sign of foul play and no obvious sign of the cause of death. Investigators said the body could have been washed to its resting point from anywhere upstream.
The man does not match any missing person reports in the region, and his fingerprints are not on file in a national database. Also, no dental matching was possible because the man didn't have many teeth.
The DNA Doe Project would later become involved in the case.
