  • Case History

The editor of a local paper telephoned sheriff's deputies and told them he received anonymous information that a woman's body could be found in the picnic area of Sugar Pine Point State Park on the western shore of Lake Tahoe.

Sheriff's deputies found the woman, who had struggled for her life as she was beaten to death. It is possible that she had been moved to the place where she'd been found. The people who anonymously reported finding the body were located by investigators but not held as suspects.

Some of the tips received later in the case included the allegations that the slain woman had lived at a South Lake Tahoe motel and that she had won a lot of money playing keno just before she was killed. Detectives checked out big money winners at local casinos, but did not find any useful leads.

A piece of her jewelry may prove useful in identifying her. She was wearing a chai necklace (previously thought to be a deer pendant). In Hebrew, a chai is a word and symbol meaning "life." It is also believed that her wedding band may indicate that she is Jewish.

She is buried in the county cemetery as "Unknown Female."
