Circumstances of Disappearance
Barbara was last seen at Beecroft on May 17, 1978. She had recently arrived from the United States. Barbara was a backpacker from Texas. She saw hitchhiking as a perfect way to combine travel with meeting people. With a Canadian female friend she had hitchhiked and backpacked across New Zealand, Tasmania, and Victoria. She made many new friends. When she arrived in Sydney she split from her friend and traveled alone.
On May 27, 1978, she set off from the Beecroft home of the brother and wife of her Melbourne boyfriend Chris. She planned to hitchhike to Queensland then across Australia to Perth, despite everyone warning her of the dangers of hitchhiking. She never returned. Chris's brother believes she was murdered after hitching a lift with the wrong person.
