On May 9, 1983, Tony's mom last saw her son getting ready for school as she headed off to work. Tony had a short, half-mile walk north on Fremont Street to Lemmon Valley Elementary School. He didn't show up for class, but the school didn't call his mom to let her know because it wasn't school policy back in 1983.
Tony typically called his mom when he got home from school, but he didn't call her on the day he disappeared. She became concerned when she returned home from work, and it began to get dark, and Tony still hadn't arrived home.
There were reports that Tony was seen walking south on Freemont Street, the opposite direction to school, possibly toward a local 7-11. A witness reported seeing Tony leaning over and talking to an unknown adult male in a rusty car, possibly a Fort Pinto or Camaro.
