Jondalar was last seen leaving his family's residence in St. Michael, Alaska on May 19, 1998. He had a .20 gauge Winchester pump-action shotgun, a blue tarp, and a camouflage tarp with him at the time. He apparently told his classmates that he was planning to walk to Unalakleet once school was out for the day. Unalakleet is a 60-mile hike up the coast across the pan ice that connected the island to the mainland at the time that the young man left. The ice had melted several weeks later.
