Dentals: The skull's upper jaw was completely without teeth, and a full upper dental plate found with the remains indicated the individual wore dentures for most of his adult life. The lower jaw was not recovered, and no teeth were found with the remains.

The remains were unearthed by a bulldozer during an excavation of an old cinder cone in Puna, in an area bordering the Waokele Forest Reserve, where residents suspected marijuana cultivation. The area was also described as being in the upper Opihikao area of Puna, and upslope of Ala Ili Road near Kalapana.
The remains included a partial skull, a full upper dental plate, pelvic bones, leg bones, an arm, a wrist, three vertebrae, and socks containing foot bones.
A forensic anthropologist examined the bones and found no evidence of foul play.
The land where the remains were found was purchased in 1995, and a former public access road in the area was sealed.
