Circumstances of Disappearance

On June 30, 1981, Owens, who was living with her family across from the Kalaloch Lodge in west Jefferson County, took a baby-sitting job in a trailer located in Clearwater 10 miles away. It was understood that the job would extend into the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Owens was accompanied by the mother of the child to be watched and transported in a pickup truck driven by Ken Barry.

On July 2, 1981, the mother of the child to be watched returned home after a night out to find the child asleep on the couch, who had evidently not been cared for in some time. She also found a broken, blood-spattered Galliano liquor bottle as well as blood stains on the floor, but not enough to conclude a serious or fatal injury had occurred. The blood found at the trailer after Owens' disappearance matched her blood type, but DNA testing was not available in 1981 and it has never been confirmed that the blood was hers.

The suspect in the case, Barry, died of a heart attack in 1986. Detectives found broken glass and blood spatters that were consistent with the probable blood type of Owens in his pickup truck. Barry denied any knowledge of the whereabouts of Owens and provided alibi information in an interview with law enforcement.

A family hired Barry as a handy-man to install a barbed-wire fence in 1981. A family member witnessed Barry bringing something to bury in the woods and digging a large hole in a wooded area off of the family's property. When confronted by the family member, Barry said he needed to dig out a root for a fence post.

Jefferson County pursued this tip and excavated three separate areas on the mentioned property, which included digging holes that were 10 feet deep and 30-40 feet wide in three separate areas but the lead turned up no results.

Owens is described as a quiet child who kept to herself. Extensive searching in the areas of Clearwater and Kalaloch was conducted, but Owens has not been located.
