Circumstances of Disappearance Ninety minutes after the pair left the hotel, Balkan made a brief phone call to their
fellow flatmate, Susan Gilchrist, saying they would not be home for a prearranged dinner
and that they were in Wollongong. Neither of the women, who worked as nurses in Sydney, have been seen or heard from since that time. Investigators Source Information:

Balken and her friend, Gillian Jamieson,
were last seen at 19.30 on Saturday, June 12, 1980, leaving
the Tollgate Hotel in Church Street, Parramatta, New South Wales, with a man dressed
in dirty work clothes and wearing a floppy black cowboy-style hat.
They planned to hitchhike from Thirroul station, near Wollongong, to Sydney.
They had a history of hitchhiking and experimenting with drugs.
