Circumstances of Disappearance
Junghänel was last seen by her parents in Düsseldorf, Germany on September 25, 1991.
Junghanel returned on October 4, 1991 after an one-week tennis vacation with a friend at that time from Austria. Karin wanted to visit her parents on this evening, but she did not arrive. About 21:30 o'clock she came back into the home of her friend, who had already gone to bed. Karin went to sleep, however left the home sometime in the night - from this point on there is no trace of her.
It is assumed that her partner wanted to separate with her to revive an old relationship again. Karin thought that the common "spontaneous" tennis vacation was planned with the former girlfriend originally. It is thought that Karin after hearing the confession drove around aimlessly in her car. The vehicle, a Mercedes 190E, was found abandoned by the police on 5 October 1991 unlocked on the Düsseldorf south bridge.
The police do not believe she committed suicide. On October 6th and 7th 1991, cash was withdrawn from her account at a value of in each case of 400 D-mark. An acquaintance is believed to have recognized Karin in the Krefelder city center on May 29, 1992. A search there was unsuccessful. Since that time, there has been to trace of Junghanel.
