Circumstances of Disappearance
Bastholm was last seen at a bus stop in Gloucester, England on January 5, 1968. She was going to go visit her boyfriend and play Monopoly with him, but never got on the bus. A few of the game's pieces were found on the ground near the bus stop.

In 1994, notorious serial killer Fred West confessed to killing Mary. There were links between the two of them; Mary was a waitress at a cafe where Fred often ate. He was never charged in connection with her case. Fred and his wife Rosemary, whom he did not yet know in 1968, kidnapped at least a dozen girls and young women, killed them and buried their bodies in the backyard.
After being arrested, Fred hanged himself in prison before trial. Rosemary went to trial in October 1995 and was convicted of ten counts of murder, and sentenced to life in prison for each one.

Mary's remains were never located.
