Debora was last seen walking to school between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. on February 28, 1972. Her books were later found in a trash can one block from her family home.
Debora's family believes she was abducted and killed by serial killer, Gerald Schaefer. A one-time Martin County police deputy, Schaefer had been linked to the deaths of 20 or more girls and young women between 1969 and 1972, including at least two other girls from Pompano Beach. He was murdered by a fellow inmate at Florida State Prison in 1995. Schaeffer worked for Debora's father and was at the family home both before and after she disappeared.
