Circumstances of Disappearance

March was last seen at her home in Forest Hills, Tennessee on August 15, 1996. The last person reportedly seeing her is her husband Perry March. According to her husband, Janet packed some bags, walked out the door and drove off. She did not say where she was going.

A week into the investigation, police found Janet's car, parked in the lot of an apartment complex a few miles from the March house. They found personal effects, including a passport.

The prime suspect in her disappearance was Perry March, who refused police requests to interview him or his children. When he also refused to allow his house to be searched, police got a warrant. Police searched the house, as well as nearby woods, two lakes and a river. They found no body, and no evidence that a crime had been committed.

In August 2005, March was arrested in Mexico in connection with Janet's disappearance. Perry March's trial on second-degree murder charges began in August 2006. On August 17, 2006, March was found guilty on all three charges against him -- second-degree murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. He was sentenced to 25 years for second-degree murder, 26 years for the previous charge of conspiring to kill his in-laws, two years for the abuse of a corpse, five years for tampering with evidence.

He also received five years for a previous conviction of stealing from his former law firm. That sentence will be served concurrently with the rest of the terms being served consecutively.

Janet's body has never been recovered.
