Kristin Smart was last seen at 02.00 in the morning of May 25, 1996, walking back to her residence hall on the Cal Poly campus from a party. She was accompanied by a fellow student named Paul Flores, who is the last known person to have seen Kristin Smart. He had reportedly just met Kristin at an off-campus party a few blocks away. Both had reportedly been drinking alcohol.
Flores stated that he parted with Kristin Smart at the intersection of Grand and Perimeter. This location is a short distance from both of their dorms.
Her identification, clothes and toiletries were left behind. She has not contacted friends or family since the date of her disappearance. Foul play is suspected. She was declared legally deceased in 2002. She was a freshman speech communications major at Cal Poly at the time of her disappearance.
In April 2021, Flores was charged with her murder. His father was charged with accessory after the fact.
