López was last seen about 20.00, in Chilpancingo, Mexico on September 26, 1996. Gregorio Alfonso Alvarado López, a teacher and Indian rights activist, disappeared after weeks of threats and intimidation by agents of the Federal Judicial Police and the state.
The professor and his family voluntarily appeared before the Judicial Police of the state and other authorities, to complain of this situation and to investigate the reasons for the persecution. Their home was being watched, pictures were being taken of the family, and they were being followed by people who had vehicles with plates of the Federal District and the state of Guerreró.
López and wife had previously sought the intervention of the (governmental) National Commission of Human Rights (CNDH), on January 25, 1996.
