Carol was last seen on September 8, 1978, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at her residence in the vicinity of W. Elm St. and N. Hudson Ave. in Sturgeon Bay. According to her husband, Richad Pierce, the two had coffee together before he left for work as a crew member on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mequite. Richard returned home between 4 and 4:30 p.m. to find Carol gone. Richard reported her missing a week later and according to police records, he claimed his wife left him and taken all their cash, but after friends visited the couple's home they discovered "all of her prize possessions...things that an individual who was going to leave would take with them" still at the house.
On Friday, September 12, Richard traveled with his truck to Cheboygan, Michigan, where he and Carol owned land. On September 22, 1975, Richard retired from the Coast Guard and moved the couple's mobile home from Sturgeon Bay to the Cheboyhan property. The trailer was not searched at the time of Carol's disappearance. In 1977, Richard was granted an uncontested divorce and he remarried.
In 2018, Richard was charged with first-degree murder and disinterment for the death of Carol. Evidence shows Richard took out a loan to buy a trencher-bulldozer and trailer in December 1975. A search of the Cheboygan property in 2008 turned up no evidence of Carol, however, police and family members suspect foul play.
