Circumstances of Disappearance

Jeffrey's mother, Susan Klungness, was found deceased in her bedroom on the afternoon of March 2, 1996. Her husband found her remains and called authorities. The cause of death was a blow to the head. There was no sign of Jeffrey, and he has not been seen or heard from since. Cash, a gold watch, and Susan's maroon Toyota Camry were also missing. The vehicle was found abandoned the next morning near a convenience store in Auburn.

An acquaintance of the family was seen at the Klungness' home on the day of the homicide. When interviewed by police, he reported taking Jeffrey to a scheduled haircut at 11:30 a.m. on March 2. He then drove Jeffrey home and then went out in the car to run some errands. When he returned, Jeffrey was gone. The acquaintance found Susan dead and panicked, so he took the car and drove away. A bank surveillance camera captured the acquaintance withdrawing money from Susan's bank account on the day of her murder. He was arrested and convicted for the theft of Susan's car. In 1980, the acquaintance was convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of his estranged wife. He was released from prison in 1992. He has not been charged in Susan's murder or in Jeffrey's disappearance. Foul play is suspected in Jeffrey's disappearance.
