Kulas was last seen by his wife, Ena when he left for a Carman's party at the American Legion in Two Harbors, Minnesota for active and retired Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway on May 11, 1985. Kulas was a retired carman from the railroad. He arrived at the event around 6PM. Around 10PM, Kulas went over to the Moose Club for some drinks. Then, somewhere between midnight and 1AM, he left the Moose Club in Two Harbors to return to his home in Bassett Lake, 23 miles north.
His 1985 blue Chevrolet Blazer was found the next day facing north in the southbound shoulder along Lake County Road (State Highway 2) just above the intersection with Lake County Highway 15 in Brimson, about 25 miles north of Two Harbors and about 13 miles from his home. The vehicle was found locked up. An intensive ground and air search was made soon after his vehicle was found. Sixty tracking dogs were used to help locate Kulas to no avail. His body has never been found.
