Circumstances of Disappearance

Averie Evans disappeared from Natchitoches on November 5, 1990, while selling candy door to door.

A neighbor, Phillip DeSelle, was arrested in January 1991. He admitted to enticing Averie into his house by telling her he wanted to buy candy from her. When she came into his kitchen he struck her, then strangled her. DeSelle put Averie's body in a plastic bag and tied it with a nylon cord. He then placed her body and bicycle in the trunk of his car and took them to an isolated road off Sibley Lake. He put Averie's body in a big trash bin near a public boat launch and threw her bicycle over a nearby bridge. In exchange for admitting to killing Averie, he was given the lesser charge of manslaughter and kidnapping. DeSelle was released from prison in 2015.

The landfill where the trash was dumped was searched but nothing was found.
