Russell was last seen around 8 a.m. on March 2, 2010, by his parents as he left their family home in West Ella to attend his classes at Bishop Burton College. The next day his Renault Clio was discovered 45 minutes away in a car park at Bempton Cliffs, near Bridlington. An all-day parking ticket was found on Russell's car which had been purchased at 11:30 a.m. on the day he went missing. Despite extensive searches on land, sea, and air, no trace of Russell has been found.
In 2019, an inquest held into Russell's disappearance concluded he had died at sea but that it was unclear how this came about. Russell has had no contact with family or friends since his disappearance.
