John was last seen at the Access Point, a homeless hostel, on Leith Street on May 1, 2009. John called his support worker from a pay phone, saying he hadn't been allowed into the hostel as they believed he was drunk. John had suffered from a stroke previously so the staff may have been mistaken by his speech. The support worker arranged to call John back, but John didn't pick up, after which he was reported missing.
John had moved out of his family's home at the age of 16 after a row with his stepfather. After that he seems to have had no fixed address, though his family did occasionally hear from him. He is known to live a transient lifestyle and travels extensively throughout the UK and Ireland. He did not attend his mother's funeral, but family say he would have had he known about it. There have been no sightings of John and he hasn't claimed benefits since May 2009. His family suspects foul play in John's disappearance.
