Herman Van Hiel was a chaplain at the Gent prison. On 7 May, he took a train from Gent/Gand to Leuven/Louvain for a meeting with criminology colleagues.
He left the class early that day. Investigators found out that he went to a bank that day to get 3000 Belgian Francs - a high amount of money at that time. Later that evening he wanted to meet a prison guard who lived in Voorhavenlaan in Gent. He never made it there. A bottle of whiskey he had bought that day as well as a map showing the way to his meeting point were found at his home.
According to police, it is possible that he disappeared voluntarily, committed suicide or met with foul play.
