The decedent's severed head and naked body were found in area more than 100 kilometres from each other and a month apart.
On February 21, 1997, a man and woman stopped at a public rest area on the southern side of the Hume Highway at Penrose, near Marulan, where they noticed a body submerged at the river's edge. The decedent was male, nude, and had been decapitated at the base of the neck.
On March 31, 1997, a group of fishermen found a shopping bag containing a man's head in Salt Pan Creek, Padstow. The head was confirmed as a match to the remains discovered at Penrose.
In 1999, the coroner found the decedent had been strangled to death around February 20, 1997. According to dental analysis, the decedent may not have grown up in Australia.
