Circumstances of Discovery

The man was first seen at an Ulster, Northern Ireland bus station on 12 June 2009, between 2:30 and 4:00 PM. He boarded a bus to Sligo, Ireland, and arrived at 18:30, checking into the Sligo City hotel, and paying per night in cash. He gave the address of "Ainstettersn 15, 4472, Vienna, Austria."

Over the next few days, CCTV footage captured him leaving the hotel multiple times carrying a purple plastic bag, only to return without it. It is presumed that he disposed of the bag's contents, then placed it in his pocket. The specific items he threw away were never able to be identified. His movements on camera were described as methodical. On 13 June, the man was seen purchasing 8 postage stamps and airmail stickers.

He checked out of the hotel on 15 June. He then walked to a shopping center, where he was seen eating a toasted ham sandwich with a cappuccino. CCTV footage captured him repeatedly reading a piece of paper before tearing it up and throwing away the pieces.

He then boarded a bus to Rosses Point beach, where he was seen by numerous passersby. On the morning of 16 June, his body was found by father and son Arthur and Brian Kinsella, who called the Gardai. The autopsy showed no signs of salt water drowning, yet no signs of foul play. Investigation showed that the address he gave at the hotel does not exist. There is no Interpol notice for the man, as he is not wanted for any crime, and nobody has formally declared him missing. His body is resting in Sligo Cemetery.
