Maureen and her boyfriend Allan Whyte were factory workers at the Crystal Egg Company on Garsed Street when they disappeared on November 23, 1968, after a dance at a YMCA on Mundy Street in Bendigo.
Allan and Maureen were last seen outside the dance hall at 21.00 when Allan's brother invited them to a party at his house. Allan declined, saying he was taking Maureen to her home in nearby California Gully. The couple has not been seen since.
Allan left behind the car he'd recently bought and his bank savings remained untouched and Maureen had not collected her wages from the previous week. For many years it was believed they had run away together and their disappearance was treated as a missing persons case. In 2001 the Victoria Police reopened the case and are now convinced they were murdered.
