Adams was last seen leaving the Newport surf lifesaving club on the night of June 24, 1978.
It is believed she intended to hitchhike home, a common practice on the Northern beaches at that time, and was spotted getting into a light-coloured 1977-model Holden panel van on Barrenjoey Road. She was reported missing by her family and boyfriend the next day.
Extensive searches were conducted in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park at the time of her disappearance.
Police said they have strong evidence linking Adams' disappearance with a string of violent sexual assaults that occurred within the area from 1971 to 1978.
Foul play is suspected.
