Maureen Hale disappeared after leaving her home, in the commuter belt town of Thames Ditton, on June 22, 1999 at around 22.00. Her husband initially told officers that Maureen had left without saying where she was going or when she would back. Since that time there has been no contact with her family or any of her friends, and her bank account and passport have not been used. Three days later her husband reported her missing to police.
She had no personal possessions or money with her.
Such a disappearance was entirely out of character for her, especially as she left behind four young children at home.
She had just come back from holiday in Greece and was said to be in a good state of mind. She had made plans to take her children to a concert and was looking forward to the 15th birthday celebrations of one of her daughters.
Mrs Hale and her husband had been having relationship troubles and she had booked an appointment to see a divorce solicitor, due to take place two days after she vanished.
Officers conducted massive searches of open land in Thames Ditton and surrounding areas but failed to shed any light on her whereabouts.
Her husband was arrested in June 2008 on suspicion of her murder. As well as being suspected of Mrs Hale's murder he was also arrested on suspicion of mortgage fraud. It is thought Mr Hale re-mortgaged their home, filling out an application form using his wife's name.
Mr Hale had been arrested in July 1999 in connection with his wife's disappearance but released due to a lack of evidence.
