Deirdre Jacob had just completed one year teacher training in St Mary's College, Strawberry Hill London. On Tuesday 28 July 1998, she left her home at about noon and walked into Newbridge to visit her Grandmother. At about 14.10 she went to AIB Bank in Newbridge and then to the Post Office and returned back to her Grandmother before setting out on the walk back home. It takes about twenty five minutes to walk to her house from Newbridge. She was last seen at approximately 15.30, at the gateway to her house, at Roseberry, Newbridge, Co. Kildare. She did not however make it to the doorway of her house and there have been no sightings of her since this.
As part of a 2017 review of the case, CCTV footage from the day of the disappearance was digitised, resulting in new witnesses. A prisoner who implicated Murphy in Deirdre's murder has also been re-interviewed. He maintains that Larry Murphy confessed to the murder while they got drunk together behind bars. Murphy initially became a person of interest to detectives after it emerged he had visited the shop owned by Deirdre's grandmother.
In 2018, her case was upgraded to a murder probe. The Garda cold case team, along with detectives and senior officers based in Kildare, have identified a number of areas of interest. The areas are based in Wicklow and Kildare – areas which would have been around a 30 minute drive from where Deirdre was last seen.
In 2021, the investigation is still ongoing.
