Colleen was last seen on 14 September 1990 at Bowraville. Although her body has never been found, clothes she wore at the time of her disappearance were recovered from the Nambucca River, weighted down by rocks, in April, 1991. Her disappearance has been linked to the murder of two other Aboriginal children from Bowraville. The bodies of Evelyn Greenup, 4, and Clinton Speedy, 16, were found in bushland within 4km of the mission in 1991. Jay Thomas Hart, a white Bowraville man, was charged with the murders of Evelyn and Clinton in 1991. But he was acquitted in 1994 of Clinton’s murder, while the charge over the little girl’s death was “no-billed”.
A combined coronial inquest in 2004 prompted the Director of Public Prosecutions to reopen the case and charges were again laid against him. But the alleged killer was allowed to walk after prosecutors failed to convict him.
