Charles was last seen in Nice, France on March 21, 1991 in the family residence where he lived with his father and grandparents after his parents recent separation. Police dogs were brought to the house on the the day of his disappearance. The dogs lost Charles' scent at the entrance to the house. Family members have said that Charles was a shy boy and would never have left the house in the middle of the night dressed in pajamas.
His father was convicted of his murder in 1997. It is presumed that Charles-Edouard's father killed him to take his revenge on his wife who wanted to divorce from him.
The father told his wife he buried him in Col de St Roch, a local area which is mountaineous, near a cross.
