Lauer was last seen on July 1, 1992. In the night from June 30 to July 1, 1992, she left her workplace around midnight by car and drove to her home in Haundorf near Gunzenhausen. She left her flat again shortly thereafter. She was last seen during the following morning between 8 and 10.30 a.m. It is unclear what happened to her afterward. Two days after her disappearance, her car (Ford Fiesta, orange-red, license plate WUG-AN 438) was found in the "Steingass" parking lot in Gunzenhausen.
