Mariano was last seen in Malaga, Spain between the December 31, 1995 and January 1, 1996. He left his residence after receiving a telephone call, which made him upset according to his parents.
His car was found the same day in the afternoon, near "La Laguna" camping, at the locality Torre del Mar, Malaga.
Mariano's family tried any possible way to find him including posters, press articles and TV Shows. During one of transmissions of a Tv-show, a telephone call was received and a female voice said "He is OK", and hung up the phone immediately after.
