Landos was last seen by his mother on January 8, 1973 when he left the Erskine River Caravan Park, upset at missing the chance to go rabbit shooting with his father at nearby Deans Marsh.
John had gone to the beach and was late coming back, so his father left without him. The family believed John had left to look for his father, who had promised to take him shooting for the first time.
Many unconfirmed sightings were reported to police at the time. The most likely was of a boy fitting his description walking along a road near the area where his father was shooting. The last confirmed sighting of John was later that day. He was walking along Dean's Marsh Road wearing a red short-sleeved shirt, brown corduroy pants and white sandshoes.
None of his clothing or personal items have ever been found.
Police are interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen a 1966 grey Ford utility truck in the Lorne area at the time of John's disappearance.
